I am looking into purchasing a programmable thermostat and I don’t know if any programmable thermostat will go with any air conditioner or only certain types or brands of thermostat go with certain type or brands of AC units.
Does it matter or can I just go out and buy any programmable thermostat and hook it up to my 2-ton Trane XE 800?

the main thing is to buy the correct one
AC or Heat Pump
I installed one last year, get one that matches your ac system

Most heating and cooling systems use 24 volts A.C. for their control voltages and are switched by relays with what are called “dry contacts” in the thermostat. Most off the shelf thermostats will work fine, but checking with your manufacture would be a good idea for this project.

Most any thermostat would work. Before you go out and buy one do your homework. Go to the hvac ratings page at http://www.hvac-for-beginners.com . Start with the premium thermostats page. You can find out how the brands rank.

Thermostats are pretty much universal anymore. Match the color coded wiring from the unit to the coding on the stat. It is basically a switch, not as difficult as it looks.
