Thermostat Not Swiching On And Off Automatically?

The heating programmer seems to work ok but the house gets too warm and the thermostat doesn’t seem to automatically switch off and back on again as the house cools we have to manually turn the dial. Engineers have checked the thermostat with the hairdryer test and it seems to work then. It seems like the thermostat is not talking to the boiler so we are either boiling hot or freezing cold. Help!
