Is Installing A Programmable Thermostat A Diy-type Task, Or Do We Need To Get An Electrician?

Nov 19th, 2009 by Thermo

We’re somewhat handy around the house. My husband has installed a ceiling fan in the past… Is installing a programmable thermostat doable for the weekend handyman? Any specialized tools or knowledge required? We have a digital thermostat installed already, it’s just not programmable.

It is super easy. I installed one in under 10 minutes with just a screwdriver, and I had never done it before. All of the wires are supposed to be color-coded as are the connections on the thermostat.

First make sure you have a thermostat that will work with your kind of heat. (gas, electric, heat pump) Then turn of the power to your unit so you do not blow the transformer. You will need a small straight blade screwdriver and then just follow the directions.

It is as simple as removing the old thermostat from the wall, disconnecting the wires and reinstalling the wires to the new thermostat. The wires and terminal (screws) should be color coded.

Before disconecting the old one put some mawsking tape on the wires and write what they went to and read the instructions on the new thermostat.

Read the directions. No special tools needed.

I did it. It was quick and the directions were simple. I only needed a screw driver.
