Switching To A Programmable Thermostat?

I want to switch to a prgrammable digital thermostat but I am not sure which one to get. I heat with propane and my AC is electric. The trermostat I have now is one with the mercury inside, it is made by GMC (Goodman Mfg. Corp.) and is for heating and cooling and says 30 volts A.C. and 1.5 Amps. I guess my question is which thermostat do i need or what do i need to look for when buying one?
