Braeburn 1200 Non-programmable Thermostat

I have a Braeburn 3000 and want to upgrade to the 5000. The owner’s manual indicates that they have compatible bases. Why would the previous house owner have even installed a non-programmable thermostat? Are there advantages that I’m not understanding.
